"A Tour of Umbria" Itinerary

Saturday

We will meet at the Rome airport and together with an escort will leave for our farmhouse near Assisi. After being assigned our rooms, everyone will meet for a welcome drink and spend time getting to know one another. Dinner will follow.

Sunday

Breakfast in the hotel. We will travel to Norcia, an Umbrian town famous for its black truffles and for having been the first "school" of meat curing in the world. Tour of the city. You cannot go to Norcia without visiting Castelluccio di Norcia - a high plateau situated at 1200 meters above sea level that resembles the endless plains of Tibet. We'll then proceed to Gianni's where we'll have lunch in an ancient olive oil mill, and we'll taste some local specialties. In the late afternoon, we'll return to our farmhouse where dinner will complete our day.

Monday

Following a typical Italian breakfast, our day will begin with a ride alone the "olive tree trail" to a small, mountainous village (population 44) along the slopes of Mt. Subasio called Collepino. From here, our next visit will be to Spello, the town of 300 churches, where we'll enjoy a walking tour of one of Umbria's undiscovered jewels. A drive through small country roads across the valley will take us to Bettona, a town of Etruscan origins. We'll stop for a light lunch and then continue on towards Deruta, famous for its ceramics. The brilliant colors used in the ceramics will bring you to appreciate the craftsmanship which has been handed down from generation to generation. We'll visit a factory and see how these ceramics are made and painted before visiting the unique church of Madonna dei Bagni. We'll stop for a brief snack before returning to our farmhouse for some relaxation prior to our evening meal.

Tuesday

The morning will be dedicated to a visit of Perugia, the capital of Umbria and its underground fortress called Rocca Paolina. Following a walking tour of the city, we will drive to Lago Trasimeno and will stop for lunch and views of the lake. We'll then make our way back toward Assisi and our farmhouse for our first cooking class with Mamma Maria. At dinner we'll enjoy the fruits of our labor.

Wednesday

Our day will be dedicated to the city of St. Francis: Assisi. Along the city's small streets we'll discover the various historical highlights and we'll reach the Basilica where an English speaking priest will guide us through this extraordinary place of worship and art. After lunch we'll visit "L'Eremo delle Carceri" a mystical place where Francesco went to meditate and pray. Upon our return to the farmhouse, there will be the option of going on a truffle hunt before dinner.

Thursday

After breakfast we'll be off to Foligno and Palazzo Trinci, the home of a noble and ruling family in the 1600s. We'll take a walking tour of the city through the main piazza to see how normal life unfolds in this town before moving on to Montefalco where we'll enjoy lunch. From Montefalco, we'll proceed to Bevagna, an ancient Roman military post. We'll visit craft shops that teach techniques dating back to the Middle Ages. We'll then enjoy an "apertivo" in the main square before returning to the farmhouse for dinner.

Friday

This will be a free day to relax or spend time shopping. In the late afternoon, we'll enjoy another cooking class followed by our farewell dinner.

Saturday

Departure to the next destination or to the airport.
