The Italian Government has created a classification of hotels which is based on standards.  Criteria are the number of rooms the hotel offers, if there is an elevator, a restaurant, air conditioning etc.  Undoubtedly there are many four star hotels with a check on every item, however the property lacks warmth and the front desk manager has forgotten how to smile.  Il Viaggio chooses hotels for the Ultimate Collection based on the appearance and functionality of the rooms.  Since most hotels are housed in historic buildings, room size is often an issue.  While a room may not be large, it can still provide all the amenities and functionality to make your stay enjoyable and comfortable.  All the hotels we select have private baths in the guest rooms.  In the city hotels, air conditioning is a must for the summer months.  Most importantly the front desk must demonstrate a warm sense of hospitality.  Our guests must feel they are welcome, as if they were staying in a private home.
